New Toys

I have not written much recently obviously because of the christmas hols, suffice to say I've eaten and drunk far too much and have had a great time with my family.

I thought I'd write a little bit about some new toys I've just got. I bought myself a new keyboard and a AMD 64 X2 3800 cpu.

Firstly I'll say something about the service that I got, I used ebuyer to make these purchases. I know ebuyer get a reasonable amount of bad press so I have used them before in the past must be about 5 times now for the odd thing. With each confirm purchase button I press with them there is always a little wince and a fleeting thought wondering if this is the order of doom! But I must say so far they have not let me down yet. This order was even better, I placed the order last night after 6PM and had received the goods this morning before 12, Now thats what I call service!
The next day delivery cost £10 but is worth it when you are keen to get the goods.

I do have another couple of suppliers that I use regularly when I need stuff and they have always given me faultless service too.

The keyboard I bought was a Microsoft Natural Keyboard 4000, pictured below:

I bought this keyboard because I really like ergonomic keyboards and after having a Microsoft natural keyboard pro for many years on my main pc I thought it was time for a new one. The keybaord itself is in black and silver and still has the extra buttons that people seem to rarely use. It comes vista certified (well its a keyboard), although when you stick in the driver disk vista warns you that there are compatibility problems with the software and prompts you to download a different release of the software. So far the keyboard feels great, nice sturdy quality. Although I do like clicky keyboards and this isnt one I shall forgive it. The keyboard itself is slightly smaller than my old one so as a touch typist I trip over the odd key now and again. Anyway the keyboard is great and a couple of rounds of COD2 affirmed to me that it was a good buy.

My next purchase was proberbly as far as I can take my current motherboard without a major upgrade of cpu memory and other bits and bobs. I bought a skt 939 AMD 64 X2 3800+ which was an upgrade from my old 64 3000+. I'm hoping that it will help make virtual pc run a bit quicker on my machine when Centurion and Battlestar and Wrkstn2 are running on it.Whilst it is fine with the 3000+ I thought for a small price I might get a bit of a speed boost with the new kit.

My pc at the moment has 2GB's of ddr400 ram in it and also the new processor, also an ATI x800xt vga card, audigy 2 soundcard with breakout box, a 40GB ide hdd and a 250GB sata drive, plus a cdrw and dvdrw drive and wifi card. As you proberbly know the 939 format seems to peek at an x2 4000+ give or take so the 3800+ will be the last minor upgrade my pc gets before I rip it all out and start again.

I must admint that the year and a bit I've been concerntrating of studying software etc all the cpus, socket formats and faster memory has run away from me a bit so when I thinks its time to upgrade I'll have to figure out all the new hardware again.

COD2 seems to load a bit quicker for me at the moment but thats about the only test I've been able to do so far with the new CPU installed. So I'll give it a proper thrashing at some point.

Current network diagram

Heres a little update on my current network, as you can see the server count is way over what is actually needed for the 1 workstation. currently the workstation and battlestar and ceturion are all virtualised on my main games pc, so they arnt the fastest in the world but they are responsive enough for me.

Patch panel

Heres a quick pic of a little purchase I made on a famous auction website. The patch panel is 24 port and is a standard 19" rackmount size. the panel itself only cost a few pounds I think it was about a fiver so I wasnt expecting it to be top quality but I have been pleasantly surprised with it so far. Im sure a similarly sized managed switch will be joining it in the not too distant future as well.

290 book has arrived

Well the 290 exam cram book has arrived and as I've only read a chapter or two so far, I'd thought I'd make a couple of comments about it.

Firstly the paper its printed on is lower quality than expected, which as I'm into books is a little disappointing I like books to look and feel well made, this one is printed on slightly higher quality newspaper paper by the feel of it.

The other thing I think worth mentioning is there is a overly large section on the format and purpose of MS exams. Now as it is an almost excepted given that when doing MCSE/MCSA you do the client exam/s first then most people will be comfortable with the exams and the MS way of doing things already.

Apart from that the content so far is of good quality. I shall keep you up to date as I continue to study for the 290.

exam cram 2 book for the 70-290

Just a quick update, I have just ordered the exam cram 2 book for the 70-290 to compliment my mspress training guide. Also I have installed the correct server 2003 version on my laptop to play with, I did install it as a DC but decided that it was a bit too slow for that so dcpromo'ed it back to a member server.

Ooops

Ok so after installing server 2k3 onto my laptop using both disks I've read in my mspress book that the exam doesn't cover R2 version. So I'll have to format it and start again, oh well its all a learning curve so they say.

Laptop as a server

Last night after waiting for ages for 4gigs worth of photos etc to transfer to a usb drive I installed server 2k3 onto my laptop. The install went ok and I used the evaluation version that I got with the ms press 290 training kit. As its a server I gave it a static address with a dns address pointing to my DC and another pointing to an external DNS server. So we shall see how it goes.

Far flung future

Hi all,

After having time to come down from the excitment of passing my 270 I have had a chance to think about the future.

once I have achieved my Mcsa where do I go from there. Well I have a feeling that I would like to learn a lot more about virtualisation technology as I find it a very interesting concept plus I think that's its use will become widespread in the near future. This would hopefully put me in a better position career wise.

I know that even getting my mcsa is along way off (I'm hoping to get it inthe middle/third quarter of next year, but its worth starting to plan post mcsa.
